Sarah Shotland is the author of the books Junkette (WG Press, 2014) and Abolition is Everything (Antenna Press, 2021). With Sheryl St. Germain, she edited the literary anthology Words Without Walls: Writers on Addiction, Incarceration and Violence (2016, Trinity University Press). Sarah was trained as a playwright, and her work has been performed in professional theaters around the country and internationally in China and Spain. Her short stories and essays have been published in Ploughshares, Prairie Schooner, Creative Nonfiction, North American Review, The Iowa Review, GulfStream, Baltimore review, and other literary journals. Her scholarly work explores the intersection of public health, public safety, and public art.

Her creative work has been has been supported with grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, Smith College, the Heinz Foundations, Pittsburgh Foundation, and Opportunity Fund. She has served as artist-in-residence at miR Theater, Denver Lighthouse Literary Center, emcArts, Antenna Press, Theater Action Project, Steppenwolf Theater, and the Peking Opera. In 2009, Sarah co-founded Words Without Walls, which brought creative writing to jails, prisons, and drug treatment centers for 13 years and whose archives are currently available at the Heinz History Center. She currently serves as Program Director for Madwomen in the Attic at 麻豆精品 where she is an Associate Professor of English and Chair of the Art, Communication, and English Department.

Research Topics

Sarah Shotland’s scholarly agenda is focused on public health, public safety, and public art, with an emphasis on how the social practice of the literary arts impact public policy and public perception. Her creative practice is as a prose writer, who regularly publishes fiction and creative nonfiction in nationally recognized literary journals.
