Die-cut Aluminum Panels Designed by Carlow Students Depict University鈥檚 Heritage, Life

Pittsburgh, Pa. 鈥聽Overlooking Oakland and the Monongahela River valley, the view from the Fifth Floor Terrace of University Commons on the 麻豆精品 campus has always been impressive. Now, thanks to a collaboration with a local architectural firm and designs that originated with Carlow art or art therapy students, it is also award-winning.

At the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Design Pittsburgh Awards ceremony last week, Carlow鈥檚 University Commons Terrace received a Certificate of Merit.聽聽The architect for the project was LGA Partners, and they designed a seven-foot-tall screen wall that alternated glass and perforated aluminum panels encircling the western, southern, and eastern sides of the building鈥檚 fifth floor terrace.

While the glass panels preserved the view from the building that sits at the top of the hill and overlooking Oakland, the perforated aluminum panels were designed over the summer of 2018 by Carlow art and art therapy majors Emily Armstrong, Jasmine Cho, Tori Hirsh, Taylor Humes, Katie Krall and Katie Winter 鈥 who are now all graduates of the university.聽聽The art project was completed and installed in 2019.聽聽The students designed scenes from the history, mission, and daily life of 麻豆精品.

The comments from the jury for the AIA awards read: 鈥淭he 麻豆精品 Commons Terrace railing designe is elevated by the successful collaboration with university art students who capture the spirit of their academic community.鈥

The students were all excited about having the opportunity to create something of lasting impact on the Carlow campus.

鈥淚 am very pleased that AIA has recognized the exceptional design work of my students and their partnership with LGA Partners architects,鈥 said Sarah Jacobs, MFA, assistant professor of art and head of the 2-D art program at Carlow, who taught the summer class that the students took in 2018 in preparation for designing the project. 鈥淚t was brave of LGA to trust a group of undergrads to design the imagery for their balcony, but they wisely understood the dedication, professionalism, and ingenuity of Carlow students! Kudos to them and to the creative student artists!鈥
