Founded in 2007 and sponsored by Madwomen in the Attic, the Patricia Dobler Poetry Award was created to honor the work of women writers and the memory of the late Patricia Dobler, esteemed English professor at Carlow, distinguished poet, and former Madwomen director.
The award is open to women writers over the age of 40 who:
Poems must be unpublished, up to 75 lines or fewer per poem; up to two poems, of any style, per submission.
Current Carlow students or employees are not eligible.

Patricia Dobler was born in Middletown, Ohio in 1939. She is the author of 鈥淯XB鈥 (Mill Hunk Books, 1991), Brittingham Prize in Poetry winner, 鈥淭alking to Strangers鈥 (University of Wisconsin Press, 1986), 鈥淔orget Your Life,鈥 (chapbook, University of Nebraska Press) and 鈥淣ow鈥 (full-length collection).
Her poems have appeared in such publications as 鈥淢id-American Review鈥, 鈥淭he Ohio Review鈥, 鈥淧loughshares鈥, 鈥淧rairie Schooner鈥, and 鈥淪outhern Poetry Review鈥.
Her work has been anthologized in 鈥淎 Gathering of Poets鈥, 鈥淎 New Geography of Poets鈥, 鈥淭he Carnegie Mellon Anthology of Poetry鈥, 鈥淲orking Classics鈥, 鈥淰ital Signs鈥, 鈥淎nthology of Magazine Verse & Yearbook of American Poetry鈥 among others.
She received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, fellowships from the Corporation of Yaddo and Villa Montalvo and a Pushcart Poetry prize.
She lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and taught for many years at 麻豆精品, where she directed the Women鈥檚 Creative Writing Center and the Madwomen in the Attic Writing Workshops. She died July 24, 2004. After her death, her 鈥淐ollected Poems鈥 was published by in 2005.
